Experience the highlands and traditions of Papua by trekking from the villages of the Yali Tribes to the Dani Tribes. The Yali Valley lies deep in the mountains of Papua. This is a challenging trekking tour and not for the faint-hearted. The Yali Valley was discovered in 1962 and has remained untouched and isolated until today.
We will take a charter flight from Wamena to Yali, bringing us overwhelming, breathtaking sceneries alongside great mountain ridges right into the heart of Papua. From there, we will start a trek from Yali towards Dani. An excellent physical condition is needed for this tour.
After your arrival in Jayapura we will transfer you to your hotel near the airport. After a rest we can go around for a tour around Sentani. Visit some beautiful sites with rewarding views over the Sentani lakes.
A morning flight will take us to Wamena, known as the Baliem Valley. In 1938 the Baliem Valley and its people were first discovered and still today the Dani and Lani tribes inhabit this beautiful valley. Car and guide is available to visit some beautiful and traditional sites of Wamena, like Napua Hills, Traditional Markets and Coffee Plantations.
In the morning we will leave to the airport to catch our flight to Angguruk on 1100m elevation. Because we fly with a light aircraft, the views will be amazing! We fly over the Mamberamo river, dense jungle and aside high mountain peaks. As soon as we fly into the Yali territory, we will see the mushroom shaped huts and villages underneath us. There is no roads nor any other kind of infrastructure. The mountains and rivers form natural borders between the villages and a small grass field serves as an airstrip for our spectacular landing. Welcome to Angguruk, welcome to Yali! Or as they say here: Wa - Wa - Wa. Today we will walk around the area of Angguruk. We can descend down to the river which is a steep descending and a good warming up for our trekking that starts tomorrow. We will stay the night in the house of the missionaries or the teachers
During the up-coming days we will hike through the Yali territory towards the Baliem Valley. We walk around 7 hours per day. We will pass many traditional villages and meet their beautiful people. The people in this part of Papua are not used to tourists and are both very shy and curious when seeing you, especially if you stay in their village. We will see how they build their gardens on very steep slopes, taste their sweet potatoes and try other, local vegetables. The meals will be prepared by the cooks and they will be simple but tasteful.
During the day the sun burns hot but in the evening the temperature cools down, making the nights sometimes even chilly. We climb and descend sometimes 1000 meters a day in this steep environment, so a good physical condition is an absolute must. We will walk besides high ravines and on hanging bridges which go over the wild rivers so no fear of heights is important.
On the 3rd or 4th day of our trekking (depending on local conditions) we will face a challenging climb up to Mountain Elite with a height of 3600M. After passing Elite, we will slowly enter the Dani territory and end our trek in Wamena. Accommodation during the trekking is very simple. This means either a house of the head villagers or teachers and sometimes an empty church. The trekking will end in Wamena, where we started our journey.
Note; Dinner in Wamena on day 9 excluded
