Absorb the beauty of Papua in this adventurous trek through Baliem Valley, where you will cross the border of the Dani and Yali tribes. It is a tour where you return to the roots of Papua and challenge yourself to meet the most beautiful people in their most fascinating and isolated environment.
In 1938, the Baliem Valley and its people were first discovered, and still, the Dani and Lani tribes inhabit this beautiful valley. This trekking adventure trip of 11 days brings you deep into the mountains of Papua, passing breathtaking views and meeting isolated tribes. Although people have started to wear Western clothes, it is fascinating to see how little their lifestyle and culture have changed over the last decades. An excellent physical condition is needed for this tour. You will cross the land border of the Dani and Yali tribes. Be ready to go back in time and explore Papua’s ancient culture and environment.
In the morning, we will depart from Wamena town to the starting point of the trek. During the trek, simple but tasteful meals will be prepared. Accommodation during the trek will be essential, and you will sleep on the floor. We will spend the nights in local schools, churches, or teachers' houses. You should bring your sleeping bag, sleeping mat, and a mosquito net for comfort. During the trek, we will boil water from the nearby springs to drink. There will be no/minimal electricity, so bring enough batteries for your camera or a portable charger. Today, we will walk around 4 hours from the starting point before reaching our first overnight stay.
We will walk between 6 -8 hours each day. The trekking varies from narrow, slippery paths to steep climbings and descends. When it rains, the path will become more complex. We will cross hanging bridges, pass local villagers' characteristic vegetable gardens, and walk through and alongside river trails. We will have fantastic panoramic views of steep forest slopes and gardens. We will pass many traditional villages and also meet with friendly local Papuans. You'll be surprised how small but physically strong these people are. Some walk several days to sell or exchange crops in other villages.
Bring a windproof jacket and some warm clothes, because when we rest in the mountain hills, the wind can blow quite hard, making you cool down too fast. Also, bring your raincoat as rain can fall anytime in these tropical environments. The temperatures can drop significantly in the evening, making the nights pleasant and often chilly.
On day six, we will have a free day in a beautiful, isolated location— a time to catch your breath and enjoy the village life.
Day 10 will be the last day of our trekking adventure. Usually, we will reach the end point of our trek just after lunch so that you will be back in Wamena in the late afternoon.
Sleeping in an excellent, well-deserved, comfortable bed and a hot shower after this tiring but exhilarating trek will feel like a reward.
