Upon arrival in Wamena, our guide will warmly greet you at the airport and transfer you to the best hotel available in Wamena, ideally located in the heart of the town. Situated at an altitude of approximately 1,800 meters, Wamena enjoys a cool, refreshing climate, making it the perfect destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.

In the afternoon, embark on an unforgettable Wamena city tour. Begin by exploring the vibrant local market, where you’ll find an array of fresh produce, including tropical fruits like bananas, papayas, and pineapples, as well as root vegetables such as sweet potatoes and cassava. The market is also home to various traditional goods and handmade crafts, giving you a glimpse into daily life in Wamena. A unique and culturally significant aspect of the market is the sale of pigs, which hold immense value within the community, often used in ceremonial exchanges and as a symbol of wealth and status.

Next, visit a coffee plantation, where you’ll learn about the process of cultivating and brewing Papua’s renowned coffee, known for its rich, bold flavor and distinctive aroma.

The adventure continues as you journey to the region's first traditional villages, where you’ll step back in time and immerse yourself in the culture of the indigenous Dani people. Experience their traditional homes, unique customs, and age-old rituals that have been passed down through generations. While modern influences have made their way into the villages, the way of life for the Dani and Lani tribes remains largely unchanged, offering you a rare glimpse into a culture that has endured for centuries. Although traditional dress such as the penis gourd may be less common today, you may still encounter a few villagers in their cultural attire.

The people are often not fond of having their pictures taken, as they believe it may capture their soul. Additionally, there may be a sense of reticence, as some villagers might feel taken advantage of due to their limited resources. If you wish to take photographs of people, it’s appreciated to offer a small fee, which helps honor their culture and livelihood. Always ask our guide for permission before taking any pictures and inquire about the appropriate fee to pay. Today, you will embark on a journey to the southern Baliem Valley, a region renowned for its breathtaking vistas and a unique glimpse into the rural life of the Papuan highlands. While road development is underway in the area, the natural beauty of the Baliem Valley remains untouched, offering an authentic, unspoiled experience.

During your trek, you will cross the rugged Baliem River via a suspension bridge. As you explore the valley, you’ll pass through the lush gardens of the Dani people, where you can witness a variety of crops and vegetables, such as sweet potatoes, corn, and other local produce. These gardens are often built on steep hillsides, highlighting the remarkable agricultural ingenuity and sustainable farming practices of the local communities.

Most of the local communities in the Baliem Valley are self-sustained, growing their own food and depending on their farms for daily survival. This independence from outside sources enables them to thrive in this remote, rugged environment, making them incredibly resilient. Their deep connection to the land and sustainable lifestyle is both inspiring and beautiful.

The friendly locals you meet along the way are often traveling to sell their harvest at the markets in Wamena town. It is awe-inspiring to witness their strength and resilience as they carry heavy loads across rugged terrains.

This trek provides the perfect opportunity to connect with the Dani people and see how they live in harmony with the land. Along the way, you’ll experience one of the most scenic and culturally rich areas of Papua, making it an unforgettable adventure.

Today is a day rich in Papuan culture. Your journey begins in Jiwika, a traditional Dani village, where you’ll have the unique opportunity to witness a well-preserved mummy that is over 250 years old. This mummy, the pride of the village, was once the head warrior of his tribe and is highly revered by the local community.

In a nearby village, you’ll experience the fascinating mock war traditions and the famous traditional feast of the Dani tribe. Before outside contact with the world, the Dani people often had to defend their territory from neighboring tribes. It is a rare opportunity to witness their war dances, rituals, and their impressive local attire, which the community proudly wears to preserve their heritage. While it might feel somewhat "staged," we believe this is an important way for the Dani people to keep their culture and traditions alive. The locals are incredibly proud to share their rich heritage with travelers, and the authenticity of their traditions is deeply felt during the performances.

You will also witness another important cultural event still practiced today during major celebrations such as weddings or religious festivals. This event is the Barapen feast, a traditional method of cooking food using hot stones in a pit in the ground. Meat and vegetables are placed in the pit and steamed to perfection, creating a truly authentic and flavorful meal.

After breakfast, we begin an exciting 4WD jeep adventure towards the Habema Lakes, one of the highest lakes in Indonesia, located at an altitude of 3,225 meters. As we leave the Baliem Valley behind, the drive takes us through winding roads surrounded by lush forests, which resemble the beauty of European autumn landscapes. Along the way, we’ll make several photo stops to capture the stunning views of the Papuan highlands.

After approximately two hours, we arrive at the Habema region. We will find a suitable spot to set up our camp, offering you a chance to immerse yourself in the peaceful surroundings. The area is characterized by meadows of dwarf cypresses, rhododendrons, and various species of orchids. You’ll have time to explore the area. If the weather is dry enough, we’ll trek down to the Habema Lakes, where the views are nothing short of breathtaking. The surrounding scenery is incredibly scenic, with lush meadows and vibrant flora, making it a perfect spot for photography and relaxation.

As night falls, the clear skies will reveal a thousand stars, creating a magical atmosphere. It is very chilly in these high altitudes so a campfire will be set up to keep you warm as you unwind under the stars. In the morning, you’ll witness a stunning sunrise over the lakes, providing a peaceful start to your day.

After breakfast, we will drive to the other side of the lakes, where you can enjoy panoramic views of savannah-like landscapes. In the afternoon, we’ll head back to Wamena, concluding this incredible day in the heart of Papua’s natural beauty. You will stay in the best hotel available in Wamena town.
