Day description
Day 1: Pick up Kaimana – Transfer to Hotel – City tour to local markets, Old China Town and Dam 14.
You get to Kaimana by flying from Sorong with Wings Air. The flight to Kaimana normally arrives in the afternoon. Our guide will pick you up from the small airport and you will drive via a coastal road towards town. Only a 20 minutes’ drive. The road brings you pleasant views of Kaimana Bay. Typical of Kaimana are the mangrove trees and other tree-kinds that can survive in salt water and you will find them standing strong in the sea along Kaimana’s coastline. We walk over the colourful bridge that will lead us to the local market. In the afternoon children love to fish, play and jump off the bridge right into the river. The traditional market in Kaimana is nicely located beside the river that flows into the ocean. Merchandisers sell all kinds of products. From fresh fish caught in the morning to Sago (staple food in Papua extracted from the Sago Palm), Betelnut, Casava, Fruits, Spices, Vegetable etc. We continue to our hotel to check in. The hotel is centrally located directly at the sea (not suitable for swimming). It has standard facilities and we stay in the ocean view rooms where we have the best view when sunset sets in. Kaimana is known for its spectacular sunset. During the city tour we will also visit the old town of Kaimana where we will find old Chinese owned shops. If enough time will visit dam 14. This dam is popular among the local tourist that like to come here during the weekend and holidays. Bring your bathing clothes because you may want to cool yourself down the river at the dam. In the evening your guide will take you to local fish restaurants or you can have dinner in your hotel.
Hotel: Kaimana Beach II – AC Ocean View Room
Day 2: AM Snorkelling with Whale Sharks and Exploring Surrounding Area
We need to leave very early, before sunrise because we want to be at the fishing platform the moment the fisherman lift their nets. This is the moment the small fish fall from the nets, thinking they have freed themselves from fishery but not knowing they are snacky breakfast for the whale sharks. With a bit of luck, we will be accompanied by tens of dolphins who feast here as well. Many birds are flying around trying to catch a meal too.
Note:
- Please note that this tour is weather dependant and sightings of wildlife cannot be guaranteed
- Seeing the whale sharks also depends on the operation of fishing platform in which we have no control
- The tour is best to be planned around new moon
Depending on where we can find the whale sharks, we will continue to explore the surrounding area. If the whale sharks are around Bitsyari bay we can visit the floating raft of a pearl farm and see how workers clean the clams. Here we can also find kilometres long rock paintings and beautiful beaches. If the whale sharks are around Namatota or Triton Bay, we can explore the area here. We can visit Karst Island and beautiful beaches.
We stay the night in Aeva resort. The resort is on a stunning location close to Karst island, a group of karst rocks and islands protruding from the surfaces through which we can pass. Aeva is owned by locals and is still in the process of being developed, so keep your expectations low. The rooms have good air conditioning and warm water. The locations and views are all worth it. During the day, the electricity is turned off. There is no/ limited phone reception. Meals in Aeva are included.
