Highlights
Be ready to go back in time and walk through the ancient world of the Dani tribes during this group tour in the southern part of the Baliem Valley. You return to the roots of Papua and challenge yourself to meet the most beautiful people in the most fascinating environment.
In 1938, the area of Baliem Valley and its people were discovered, and the original Dani and Lani tribes still inhabit this beautiful valley today. We will trek through the southern Baliem Valley, which offers excellent and exciting trekking routes and an unforgettable adventure for your soul. A fantastic physical condition is required for this tour. You pass mountainous and isolated areas where you will meet friendly tribes living according to their traditional ways. Although people have started to wear Western clothing, their habits and way of living have not changed much in the last decades. We take you back to the roots of Papua in a fascinating and pure environment and will see their mock war and traditional feast.
Meals included: Lunch & Dinner
Upon arrival in Wamena our guide will greet you at the airport and transfer you to Baliem Pilamo hotel, the best hotel in town. Meet with the group. Wamena town lies on approximately 1800m altitude, giving it a pleasant temperature.
Later in the afternoon, we will go on a city tour. You will visit a local market in town, a coffee plantation and the first traditional villages.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunchbox, Dinner
Today is a day full of culture. In Jiwika, a typical Dani village, you will see a well-preserved, over 250 years old mummy which is the pride of the village. He was the head warrior of his tribe and a very respected man. In a neighbouring village of Jiwika, you will witness the great traditions of the mock wars and the famous pig feast of the Dani tribes: Before the people in the Baliem Valley became in contact with the outside world, they often had to defend their territory against other villagers. It is very interesting to see how they prepared themselves to go on such wars. Today we will see their war dances and rituals in their beautiful local attires. You also see another cultural event that is still implemented nowadays during important celebrations like weddings or religious celebrations. This is the traditional feast that we call 'Barapen'. It is a traditional way of preparing food by using hot burned stones in a pit in the ground. The meat and vegetables will steam there until they are cooked. A very tasteful meal which you might like to try as well.
Meal included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
We will depart from Wamena town to the starting point of the trek. During the trek, simple but tasteful meals will be prepared. You should bring your sleeping bag, sleeping mat, and a mosquito net for comfort. During the trek, we will boil water from the nearby springs to drink. There will be no/minimal electricity, so bring enough batteries for your camera or a portable charger. Accommodation during the trek will be fundamental. We will spend the nights in local schools, churches, or houses of the teachers of the villages on the ground. Today, we will already walk around 4 hours from the starting point before reaching our first overnight stay.
