Waigeo island in Raja Ampat is covered with lush tropical forests hiding the Red Birds of Paradise and the Wilson Birds of Paradse. Waigeo, which is the largest island of the Raja Ampat group, offers a wide range of attractions. Just an hour drive from the capital city of Raja Ampat, Waisai, the magical saltwater lake Mayalibit Bay awaits to be further explored. It is yet seldom visited by foreigners.
We will pick you up from the airport of Sorong and bring you to the harbour. There you will catch the public fast ferry to Raja Ampat’s capital Waisai which lies on the Island of Waigeo. From Waisai a 30 minutes drive by car to your homestay in Sauporkren is arranged. You will stay in a nice homestay on a beautiful location owned by the local people. In it's 'backyard' hides the Red Bird of Paradise. Right in front of the homestay you can go snorkeling in the clear blue ocean. All meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) are included and prepared by the homestay.
In the early morning (around 4/5AM) we will take you on an exciting trip to see the Red Bird of Paradise. A 4wheel drive jeep will take us as close as possible to the birding sites. For the Red Bird of Paradise you need to walk approx 15 minutes over a jungle path. This bird plays high in the trees so make sure to bring your own binocular. You will be back around 9 - 10 AM to have breakfast in the homestay. Have a rest or take a swim in the ocean, because in the afternoon (around 3PM) we will visit the Wilson Bird of Paradise. An easy trip, because the jeep can take us close to it's hiding place. The Wilson Bird of Paradise is a small bird with intense colors. It plays on the ground and you can watch him by hiding in a 'blind'. You will be back in your homestay in the late afternoon.
You will be taken to unique Mayalibit Bay to experience magical views in front of your own eyes. From the homestay it is about a 45 minutes drive. The car will take us to a small village. You can walk around the village to see the local lifestyle before we continue by local boat. The local boat will take us further into the jungle. After a 20 minutes boat ride we need to continue by foot. We will walk across a shallow river and start trekking deeper into the jungle for approx. another 20 minutes. It is mainly flat terrains. At the end of the trek lies a shimmering blue river which water is one of the clearest ever seen. You can have a swim in the river to find the never ending water source coming out of the rocks. After a refreshing swim, we will head back to the boat. You will be taken back to the village where we started. On your way back you can have a stop at a waterfall. In the early afternoon you will be back at the homestay to enjoy your last hours of daylight in paradise.
A free morning to spend at the homestay. You can go snorkeling or walk to the nearby village of Sauporkren. A neat village of the simple island life style can be seen here. In the afternoon, you will take the fast ferry back to Sorong. In Sorong you will be transfered to your hotel. You will stay in the best hotel in Sorong city. A nice reward after spending the days under local circumstances.
