Biak is a coral island located in the Cendrawasih Bay on the northern coast of Papua. It has a fascinating combination of history and the natural beauty of waterfalls, deserted beaches, and tropical island views. During this tour, history meets paradise. You will visit historical sites of Biak that conceal fascinating stories of WWII. And you will get a taste of the Papuan Pacific island lifestyle, which is unique.
Upon your arrival in Biak, you will be transferred to your hotel. You will stay in the old Dutch KLM hotel built in the 50's, now called Asana Biak. This old KLM hotel was an important meeting place for the Dutch community during this period. Much of the old hotel is still preserved, like the entrance, the restaurant, and some rooms. You will stay in the new rooms with a direct ocean view. Enjoy your free day at the tropical swimming pool overlooking the ocean or stroll in the neighborhood. The streets are lovely and peaceful, and Biak is one of Indonesia's cleanest islands!
The battle of Biak was fought in 1944 between the United States and the Japanese Army during the WW II New Guinea campaign. Around 10.000 Japanese and 500 Americans have lost their lives on this island. We will visit one of the many caves in Biak where Japanese troops used to hide in the time of the war. A collection of WW II remains can be found in a small museum near the Japanese Cave. Afterward, we will go to a small wood carving workshop to see traditional wood carving. The local people make beautiful musical instruments here. If you have enough time, you can visit one of Biak's waterfalls before ending the day at Biak's beautiful and deserted beaches, where you can relax and swim away the day.
A free day to fill in or book a trip to Padaido Island:
Optional Snorkel Trip to Padaido Islands: We will drive towards Bosnia, departing by local boat to explore Owi and Rurbas islands from the Padaido archipelago. Discover the magical underwater world and enjoy the white sandy beaches with swaying palm trees. Lunch will be set on the beach in picnic style. You can go on a discovery trip to Owi island to see an old airstrip from the alliance that fought against Japan during WWII. Despite some trees overgrowing the site, the airstrip is still in perfect condition. You will be brought back from paradise to your hotel at the end of the afternoon.
