How to get there

How to travel to West Papua, the most eastern province of Indonesia? You might be surprised by the travel distance within Indonesia as the length of the country stretches over 5,000 Kilometers. You can fly to Papua for example from the international airports of Jakarta, Bali (Denpasar) and Makassar. Flying from the capital city of Jakarta to Papua can take up from 4 hours to 8 hours including the possible transits. Flight are always night flights. The main ports in Papua e.g Sorong, Jayapura, Manokwari, Biak, Merauke, Timika are easily accessible by domestic flights from Garuda Indonesia and the Lion Air Group (Batik Air, Wings Air and Lion Air).

Within Papua the road system between the cities are limited so you have to fly to get around the island. When using transportation on land, it is often arranged by 4-wheel drive jeeps that can handle the rough mountainous areas. Over the years, Raja Ampat archipelago has gained a good network of transportation from the daily fast ferries leaving from Sorong.
